Chinese (中文) — The concept of sentence components and parts of speech (the concept of sentence components and parts of speech)
Chinese is an isolating language in which verbs and adjectives do not change at all according to tense or person, and it has a 12-part-of-speech system. A classifier (量词) is required between a number and a noun, and it is characteristic that adjectives directly fill the predicate position without 是.
The concept of the 12 parts of speech and example sentences
Nouns and verbs have no inflectional change, and instead of tense, completion, experience, and continuation of an action are marked with the particles 了/过/着. Adjectives (漂亮的, 很漂亮), together with the degree adverb 很, themselves become predicates. Between a numeral and a noun, a classifier (a distinct part of speech) is required, and it is a feature of Chinese that onomatopoeia (拟声词) is recognized as a separate part of speech.
| Part of speech | Explanation | Chinese examples |
|---|---|---|
| 名词 (noun) | Names of people, things, and places | 车, 猫 |
| 动词 (verb) | Action or activity, with no inflectional change | 踢了, 觉得 |
| 形容词 (adjective) | Modifies a noun or directly functions as a predicate together with the degree adverb 很 | 漂亮的, 很漂亮 |
| 数词 (numeral) | A word indicating quantity or order | 一, 第一 |
| 量词 (classifier, unique to Chinese) | An obligatory unit word between a numeral and a noun | 本, 杯 |
| 代词 (pronoun) | Stands in for nouns, numerals, classifiers, etc. | 他, 大家 |
| 副词 (adverb) | Modifies verbs, adjectives, and adverbs | 非常, 从不 |
| 介词 (preposition / coverb) | Indicates time, place, or direction before a noun (prepositional phrases often come before the verb) | 在, 为 |
| 连词 (conjunction) | Connects words, phrases, and clauses | 和, 虽然 |
| 助词 (particle) | A grammatical marker indicating tense, structure, etc. | 了, 的 |
| 叹词 (interjection) | Surprise, feeling, calling, or answering | 哎呀, 嘘 |
| 拟声词 (onomatopoeia, unique to Chinese) | A word that imitates sound | 哗啦, 汪汪 |

Sentence components — 9-slot, 6-color diagram
① subject → ② background → ③ verb → ④ target (SVO type). Chinese differs from English in that the basic pattern is for background information (time, place, etc.) to come before the verb. Adjectives directly fill the predicate position without 是.
| Component | Color | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 主语 (subject) | red | Fixed by word order (at the very front of the sentence), with no case inflection |
| 谓语 (predicate) | blue | An adjective itself functions as the predicate without 是 (accompanied by the degree adverb 很) |
| 宾语/补语-1 (general target) | yellow | Fixed after the verb; a nominal complement linked by 是 |
| 补语-2 (state target) | flesh color | In most cases, the adjective directly fills the predicate (blue) position |
| 状语1-背景 (background) | green | A coverb (在, 跟), often coming before the verb |
| 状语2-抽象目的 (abstract purpose) | brown | '为了' |
