Japanese (日本語) — Cases of Personal Pronouns
Personal pronouns have 3 cases: nominative, objective, and possessive. In Japanese, even more thoroughly than in Korean, the pronoun form itself does not change at all, and only the particle attached to it changes.
Types of Personal Pronouns
Person (number) | Pronoun | Nominative (が/は) | Objective (を) | Possessive (の) | Possessive pronoun (~の もの) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1st person (singular) | 私(わたし) | 私が/私は | 私を | 私の | 私のもの |
2nd person (singular) | あなた | あなたが/あなたは | あなたを | あなたの | あなたのもの |
3rd person (singular) | 彼(かれ) | 彼が/彼は | 彼を | 彼の | 彼のもの |
3rd person (singular) | 彼女(かのじょ) | 彼女が/彼女は | 彼女を | 彼女の | 彼女のもの |
3rd person (singular) | それ | それが/それは | それを | それの | (hardly used) |
1st person (plural) | 私たち | 私たちが/私たちは | 私たちを | 私たちの | 私たちのもの |
2nd person (plural) | あなたたち | あなたたちが/あなたたちは | あなたたちを | あなたたちの | あなたたちのもの |
3rd person (plural) | 彼ら | 彼らが/彼らは | 彼らを | 彼らの | 彼らのもの |
Nominative (주격) — が/は
Pronouns used as the subject. 'が' is used to emphasize the pronoun itself, while 'は' is used when making it the topic of the sentence (~은/는).
Objective case (목적격) — を
These are pronouns used as the object of a verb.
Possessive case (소유격) — の
This indicates a possessive relationship. Unlike Korean '내/네', it is always used in the full form such as 私の and あなたの, without contraction.
Possessive pronoun (소유대명사) — ~の もの
It is always expressed fully as the possessive form (~の) + もの(thing). Its structure matches Korean '~의 것'.
