Japanese (日本語) — The concepts of sentence components and parts of speech (문장 성분과 품사의 개념)

In Japanese, according to school grammar (Hashimoto grammar), there are a total of 10 parts of speech: inflecting predicates (verbs, i-adjectives, na-adjectives), non-inflecting substantives and modifiers (nouns, adverbs, adnominals), conjunctions and interjections, and function words (particles and auxiliary verbs). Pronouns and numerals are included under nouns, and the point that particles (が/は/を/に) fix the role (color) is the same as in Korean.

The concept of the 10 parts of speech and example sentences

Nouns include pronouns and numerals, i-adjectives have dictionary forms ending in い and can function as predicates on their own, and na-adjectives (adjectival verbs) look like nouns but combine with だ/です to function as predicates. Adnominals modify only substantives and do not inflect, which distinguishes them from adverbs and adjectives, and auxiliary verbs (ます/ない/られる) attach after verbs and adjectives to add tense, negation, and passive.

Part of speechExplanationJapanese examples
名詞 (noun, including pronouns and numerals)Names of people, things, and places (substantives)車, 猫, 彼
動詞 (verb)Actions and processes; regular inflection ending in the u-row (predicate word)行く, 食べる
い形容詞 (i-adjective)Its dictionary form ends in い and it can function as a predicate on its own (predicate word)美しい, 眠い
な形容詞 (na-adjective, adjectival verb)Looks like a noun but combines with だ/です to function as a predicate (predicate word)静かな/静かです
副詞 (adverb)Modifies verbs, adjectives, and adverbs; no inflectionとても, 決して
連体詞 (adnominal)Modifies only substantives; no inflection (cannot be a predicate)この, あの
接続詞 (conjunction)Connects words, phrases, and clausesそして, けれども
感動詞 (interjection)Surprise, feeling, calling, and answeringおっと, しっ
助詞 (particle)Attaches after substantives and predicate words to mark roles (colors) (function word)が, は, を, に
助動詞 (auxiliary verb, specific to Japanese)Adds tense, negation, passive, etc. (function word)ます, ない, られる

Sentence components — 9-slot, 6-color diagram

①Subject → ②Background → ③Target → ④Predicate (SOV, same as Korean). Particles fix the role (color), and within the predicate slot, auxiliary verbs continue to be added after the main verb (agglutinative language).

ComponentColorExplanation
主語 (subject)RedA word with the particle 'が, は' attached
述語 (predicate)BlueVerb, adjective, or adjectival verb; always at the very end of the sentence
目的語/補語-1 (general target)YellowThe target of an action marked with the particle 'を'
補語-2 (state target)Flesh colorThe state target formed by i-/na-adjectives (mostly absorbed directly into the predicate)
副詞1-Background (background)GreenParticles 'に, で, と'
副詞2-Abstract Purpose (abstract purpose)Brown'のために'
POINT① Pronouns are included under nouns, and adjectives are divided into the two branches い and な. ② Auxiliary verbs (助動詞) are a separate part of speech not found in Korean, and they are solely responsible for tense, negation, and passive. ③ The fact that the predicate always comes at the very end of the sentence (SOV) is the same as in Korean.
