French (Français) — Sentence components and parts of speech (the concept of sentence components and parts of speech)
French has grammatical gender (masculine/feminine) in nouns, so the déterminant is separated as an independent part of speech, and it uses a 9-part-of-speech system in which adjectives change their endings according to gender and number. Unlike in Korean and Japanese, adjectives cannot replace the predicate and must combine with a linking verb such as être (être, sembler, devenir, etc.).
The concept of the 9 parts of speech and example sentences
A déterminant always attaches before a noun to mark gender and number. Adjectives modify nouns or combine with être to function predicatively, and they require gender- and number-agreement ending changes. Conjunctions and interjections are classified as separate parts of speech.
| Part of speech | Explanation | French examples |
|---|---|---|
| nom(noun) | The name of a person, thing, or place (gender distinction) | une voiture, le chat |
| déterminant(determiner, independent) | Specifies and limits a noun (article, possessive, demonstrative) | le/la/les, mon/ma, ce/cette |
| pronom(pronoun) | A word that replaces a noun | il, tout le monde |
| verbe(verb) | Action or state, conjugated for person and tense | avons joué, est |
| adjectif(adjective) | Modifies a noun or combines with être to function predicatively | belle, fatigué |
| adverbe(adverb) | Modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb; form is invariable | très, jamais |
| préposition(preposition) | Before a noun for time, place, or direction | sur, de |
| conjonction(conjunction) | Connects words, phrases, or clauses | et, quand |
| interjection(interjection) | Expresses emotion | Oups, Chut |

Sentence components — 9-slot, 6-color diagram
①Subject→②Verb→③Target→④Background (SVO, similar to English). Because adjectives cannot replace the predicate, a verb (especially être) must separately fill the predicate position, forming the flesh-colored complement-2 slot.
| Component | Color | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Sujet(subject) | red | Matches the verb form and person; fixed by word order (before the verb) |
| Verbe(predicate) | blue | être separately fills the predicate position |
| Objet/Complément-1(general target) | yellow | A target whose word order is fixed after the verb, noun complement |
| Complément-2(state target) | flesh color | être (blue) + adjective combine to form a separate slot |
